The Story Behind “The Heavens Are Telling a Story” (Psalm 19)
Some songs arrive like whispers. Others—like wide-open skies.
“The Heavens Are Telling a Story” was one of those.
The first time I heard Randy play what would become this song, he only had a verse and a chorus. But that was all it took. I was immediately drawn in by the tenderness of his guitar playing and the golden warmth of his voice. It felt like I was watching the sunrise set Scripture to music.
He told me he wasn’t sure how to finish it.
But I knew I wanted to be part of it.
I asked if he’d let me write a second verse. Thankfully, he agreed. I also contributed a coda, which now brings the piece to a quiet, prayerful close.
When we first recorded it, we were blessed to work with a group of incredibly gifted musicians and singers. They created gorgeous background harmonies that elevated the entire song. I’ve adapted those arrangements here in this setting, continuing that beauty into each new performance.
What makes this song especially meaningful to me—beyond the collaboration—is its foundation:
Psalm 19.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”
That’s not just poetic language—it’s a living truth.
Every sunrise, every sunset, every star is telling the story of our Creator.
“The Heavens Are Telling a Story” is my attempt to echo that divine message. To give voice to the song the skies are already singing.
As with many of my songs, I’ve woven in related Scriptures to deepen the meaning—creating a lyrical tapestry of truth that draws from the richness of God’s Word.
This song reminds me that we’re never alone in our worship. Creation itself is lifting up praise.
So as you listen, I pray you hear more than just a melody.
I hope you hear the sky singing too.
